The least of these

A few weeks ago as I was coming out of Goodwill there was a homeless man outside the store asking for money so that he could get something to eat. I had no dollar bill, so I gave him some change from my wallet. He was grateful and said that he just wanted a sandwich because he had not eaten in a few days.

Long story short, there was a Chinese food place next door to the Goodwill store. I walked with him inside and paid for his meal. In the process of ordering his food I observed the people around me. The girl behind the counter taking the order was visibly annoyed because the man was speaking rapidly and repeating himself over and over again. I believe he may have been under the influence of drugs or dealing with a mental illness. The look on her face said hurry up and order because he stinks and he needs to get out of my establishment. Another woman walked in to place an order and she immediately turned her nose up.

The man wasn’t being aggressive or loud or anything like that. In my head I kept thinking on any day this could be me, homeless and asking for money to buy food. Sometimes we get so judgy of others that we lose sight of why we are really here.
