Can you?

Happy New Year!!! I pray that you had an epic end to 2015 and great start to 2016 thus far!

Fall: the season of making all things new

Soft, high pitched voice, not so sure of myself. Low, normal pitched voice, confident in myself. The roller coaster of low self-esteem is something that I continue to struggle with. I talk on the phone all day at work to young adults, foster parents, case managers and directors  of various agencies. Might even encourage a co-worker on my 15 minute break.

Outside of work, I teach Sunday school lessons  every Sunday for middle through high school students and help with the facilitation of small group bible study lessons for adults mid week.

Me, have low-self esteem? Nah, not me. Not the young woman that’s fashionably dressed M-F and Sunday. Saturday’s all bets are off and sweats or lounge pants are on.  We, or shall I say I put on for other people. Get dressed up, hair laid, face beat on a regular basis all while silently suffering inside. All because we are trying to be something God has not created us to be.

Low self esteem is not developed on accident. It’s developed when we start comparing ourselves to others and make them the standard for which we base our lives. We do it all the time consciously and unconsciously. With I should’s and I cant’s we are planning to fail before we even get started. I should be married by now, I should have kids by now, I should be further in my career by now, I should be further in my faith by now. I can’t pray like so and so, I can’t cook like so and so, I can’t lose weight, I can’t be called to ministry. The lies we tell ourselves and allow the enemy to reinforce is what keeps us on the nauseating roller coaster ride of low self-esteem.

So how does one get off the roller coaster?

  • I can do all things: Philippians 4:13 I can do all things through him who gives me strength
  • Serve and focus on God not others: Matthew 6:24 No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.
  • Be YOU, unapologetically it’s the way God created you: Job 37:5-6  God’s voice thunders in marvelous ways; he does great things beyond our understanding. He says to the snow, ‘fall on the earth’ and to the rain shower ‘be a mighty downpour

Who is it that God has called you to be? He commands the snow to fall on the earth and the rain to shower down and that’s exactly what they do. If you’ve ever watched a river flow or waves crash on the beach I’m sure you’ve noticed that they do one thing and one thing only, flow and crash. Beach waves never attempt to create thunderstorms, that’s not what God has commanded or created them to do.

Easier said then done right? Here’s a few ways I am personally working on overcoming low self esteem

Daily Affirmations: I have a chalkboard next to my bed that I roll over and read when I wake up every morning. I erase the board at bedtime and write the affirmation for the next day. Along with the affirmation is a scripture that confirms it. Example: I am forgiven, because God has forgotten! Isaiah 43:25 I, even I, am he who blots out your transgressions, for my own sake, and remembers your sins no more.

Accepting and not deflecting compliments: My biggest struggle right now yall! I have the terrible habit of minimizing compliments. If someone says to me, oh your outfit is super cute today. My immediate response has been, oh thanks, I got it from “insert store name” it’s nothing special. More recently, I have been making a conscious effort to think before responding and just replying with a simple ‘Thank You’ with no additives on the end.  Like learning any new habit, it takes times, consistency and practice to change your behavior.

Remember, You Can, if you focus on God and focus on who He has called you to be!

God Bless!
